The Peter Cannings Prize
The 2016 recipient of the Peter Cannings Prize for Innovation in Digital Media in Graphic Design was Damion Robinson. The £500 prize is awarded annually to a final year student from BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design and is made to a student whose work demonstrates the most innovative use of digital media.
Peter Cannings, who died suddenly in 2012, was a Senior Lecturer at LCC for over 30 years. His wife, Jo, who also worked at LCC, set up the student prize as a memorial to Peter, in recognition of his devoted service to the College and the School of Design. From the early 1980s Peter was involved in developments in information technology and computer graphics, and he played an important role in helping to establish the viability and integration of digital media as a core element in the graphic design curriculum. His own practice included commercial and business commissions in interior design, architectural modelmaking, exhibition and information design, graphics and electronic visualisation.
Damion’s work for a project visualising the data from the Hubble Telescope was chosen as it displayed more than simple software skills, but demonstrated the use of coding
in combination with other processes and media to create a unique, digitally immersive outcome.
Candidates for the award were nominated by GMD staff, and this year Ben Leonard and Sayeed Islam were also shortlisted.
