Streco Font Launch

Sophia Tai is a GMD alumnus based in Reading, currently working as a self-employed Typeface Designer / Font Developer. Sophia began designing her latest font release, Streco, whilst at college, following on with an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading. We asked her what she is currently working on and how she got interested in typeface design.

My beta font, Streco, needs more work for future updates with more styles and character set extensions. At the moment I am also working on a contract typeface design job. My client has to stay a secret but I can reveal that it’s using a recent technology for colour fonts called COLRv1 and it will be available under an open-source license (free font) via Google Fonts. At some point I would also like to pick up Flyst, the typeface that I developed during the MATD (MA Typeface Design) course that I recently finished and have yet to decide who to publish it with.

As for my interest in typeface design, I think it was always there, since I often tried to copy letterforms and logotypes when I was a bored kid in school. But really it started to flourish because of the great teachers:
• Johannes Breyer (guest teacher & Dinamo typefoundry co-founder) at UdK Berlin (University of the Arts Berlin) – Erasmus+ exchange during the DPS (Diploma in Professional Studies) sandwich year, where I first started working on Streco
• Paul McNeil & Hamish Muir – who taught on my final year of the GMD course, when I worked on Streco and developed Streco Stencil Superfat
