Locus demo

Alumnus, Filip Havlena, recently visited us to talk to final year GMD students. One of the projects he showed is now available at createyourlocus.com – ‘Locus’ is a platform for visualising shared experiences.

Filip describes the project and its origins:

Locus is a platform that helps you discover shared moments by mapping the places where you and your chosen group have spent your lives. Locus is derived from the Latin word meaning “place” or “location.” It is often used in mathematics to denote a set of points that satisfy a particular condition. Inspired by the method of dating tree rings, the graphic system reveals the number of years spent in each location as the rings grow outward. The rings are dispersed based on geographic location and when multiple people coincided in the same place, the rings overlap, becoming visually brighter.

The project started as a last-minute Christmas gift for my family – a simple way to map out the places we’ve shared over the years. The personal project quickly grew into something bigger: a web-based platform allowing anyone to map out their shared moments and turn them into a unique artwork – a visual representation of the time spent in places that shaped their lives. With the technical help of Ondrej Pridal from Qubix Studio, we brought the idea to life”.

Filip recently went freelance after a year and a half working at Systems Studio. His portfolio website is available here: filiphavlena.com
