Lifeline Transform Mentoring Project: Final Year Student Puts Design into Practice for HMP Isis.

When GMD alumnus Alex Rose took on the job of setting up a new mentoring initiative for young offenders serving custodial sentences, he was keen to draw on the design thinking approach he had experienced at LCC.

Alex approached GMD and offered us the opportunity to collaborate on a live project with Lifeline to produce promotional and educational materials for the scheme, that communicated clearly and built a credible ‘brand’, but with very limited means of production. 30 final year students tackled the brief, with 10 shortlisted to present their ideas to Lifeline. As a result, Yharnna Joseph-Morrison’s design solution was taken forward for implementation at HMP Isis (shown).

This type of applied social design project serves to demonstrate how the application of creative problem-solving can have an impact for often forgotten audiences and challenges us with the question ‘who deserves excellent graphic design?’.
