Graduating this summer, Eikou Zhang has already been attracting international attention for their work.

It’s Nice That featured Eikou’s NODOA typeface which was a major final year project:

NODOA is a decorative Latin typeface inspired by traditional Chinese knotting craftsmanship. The design is based on the cloverleaf knot as its core unit, and it is presented in both handmade physical and 2D digital formats. Through contemporary graphic design practice, NODOA typeface seeks to offer a fresh perspective on appreciating and understanding traditional handcraft.”

Eikou’s second year poster, Mixed Message, was judged to be “Excellent Work” by the Tokyo Type Directors Club and will be included in the TDC Vol. 36 annual.

‘Mixed Message’ presents two historical statements that emphasise typographic legibility. My position is that such statements should not be understood or arbitrarily applied outside their specific historical contexts. This poster challenges the misuse and misinterpretation of these statements through various strategies of anti-legibility. From a technical perspective, this attempt also explores the possibility of completing the entire design using only a single colour.”
