Students from GMD have been selected to design a hoarding for the Dulwich Picture Gallery’s new Summer Pavilion 2019.

A cohort of designers currently studying for the Diploma of Professional Studies were asked to pitch ideas for a hoarding to announce the new Summer Pavilion while it is being built over 6 weeks. Proposals by Veronica Jones and India Wilson were selected – each created different, thought-provoking designs which explain the emerging structure and engage audiences while the Pavilion is under construction. The brief was to attract new audiences and encourage younger people to visit the oldest art gallery in the world and take part in the many al fresco activities in the Pavilion over the summer. It was an exciting challenge to work with emerging young architects, Pricegore, who teamed up with artist Yinka Ilori to create the Pavilion 2019 – a  ‘Colour Palace’ which recreates the atmosphere of a Nigerian marketplace.

“It’s been such an amazing experience working with Dulwich Picture Gallery and to be part of its history! For me, I’ve loved having the exciting challenge of working on a larger scale.”

“The hoarding literally looks back at its viewers, by being full of eyes. This celebrates the gallery’s philosophy and relationship with its past, present and future, whilst also saluting the multicultural diversity of London, a summer theme for the Dulwich Picture Gallery.”

“My design reflects on the role of light in creating the nature of inner worlds of the Old Masters. Qualities of light, inspired by classical Greek and Roman forms shaped Sir John Soane’s defining vision for the creation of the gallery space. This continues to be used deftly in the sculpting of atmospheric, innovative spaces in Pricegore’s architectural practice and in the discussions fusing together cultural identities created in the vibrant Ankara-informed patterns and environments by designer-maker Yinka Ilori’s contemporary design.”
