Developing Citizen Designers

Elizabeth Resnick’s book, Developing Citizen Designers, is on the AIGA Design Educators Community ‘must-read’ list for 2017.

The book, which is a comprehensive look at a range of international examples of socially responsible design practice from students and educators, features two projects from Graphic and Media Design students and staff.

Gülizar Çepoğlu writes about a ‘Design Activism and Social Change Workshop’, involving students across MA and BA GMD, that was held in Izmir, Turkey in 2014. The 34th Yahsibey Design Workshops Project brought together a small group of international activists, writers, educators and students for a workshop centred on communication design as a social and political act. Participating BA GMD students; Roxanne Bottomley, Freya Smith, Emily Todd and Ryan Young.

Siân Cook’s piece documents ‘Food for Good’, a project looking at ways of redistributing food waste. This was a collaborative self-initiated final year project by three BA GMD students, who graduated in 2012 and then continued working on the project as a social enterprise after leaving LCC. The team attracted funding from UnLtd (an organisation that supports social entrepreneurship) and the UAL SEED Fund.
