Start small, go big!

Second year GMD students recently took part in a generative design workshop with tutors Paul McNeil and Rob Mowbray, resulting in a ‘supergraphic’ that grew until it took over the whole of the Atrium Gallery floor.

A series of hands-on workshop tasks combined strategic applications of both “ordered and disordered systems as tools” to generate outputs. With an emphasis on learning and thinking through making and working with no anticipation of the final outcome, around 50 students manipulated over 25,000 tiles to create a single 5 metre by 10 metre piece that combined a multitude of patterns, images, numbers and symbols.

Course Leader’s afterword: This goes to show what can happen when individuals work independently and simultaneously en-masse. Wonderful stuff.
