Year 1 GMD students put on their own exhibition of work this year, CMYK’24. Year Coordinator, Craig Burston, surveys the results…

CMYK is the collective noun for the four first year studios; Cyan, Magenta, Yellow & Key. The exhibition was a testimony to their work so far and their collective and individual potential as they complete their first year of study. The displays across two studio spaces presented four projects (Two States, Unfolding Ideas, Kinetic and Reveal) covering a wide range of outcomes, materials and processes.

CMYK24 was a great success. Students across all four studios (all of whom had worked on all four studio projects) showed works that demonstrated the breadth, and depth, of GMD. Soham Chandrahaud, first year and central to the CMYK’24 curation team said that “for the majority of year one, I only really knew five people. It was through building the show that I can now confidently state that I have connected with people beyond the group and am more confident in collaborating and engaging with others.

When students undertaking the same brief produce work using diverse processes in a variety of combinations such as projection mapping, mixed reality, typography, information design, book design, print making, animation and documentary film making, all from the same starting points, you know something is working well, really well. Alina Mityukova, also part of the CMYK’24 curation team said that it “gave a sense of completion” to the year and that it “revealed multidisciplinary approaches” and “the opportunities to experiment and develop a personal practice.

I’m looking forward to CMYK’25 already.
