Deborah Tchoudjinoff (Lecturer on Graphic & Media Design) has recently produced new work for JGM Gallery, London as part of the group show themed ‘Close to Home’.

The exhibition was postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic and in reaction to their experiences of lockdown, the artists reframed their focus. In isolation the world over, the every day sublime and the power of imagination was being noticed, seen, experienced – and appreciated – more deeply, by more people than ever.” – JGM Gallery project curators Fiona Grady and Hannah Luxton

38°N9°W is a multimedia installation that explores our fascination and understanding of sunsets. Deborah was inspired by the sunsets in Portugal where she spent time learning to surf last summer. The scattering of sunlight created vibrant purple, pink and orange hues on the horizon – even more pronounced in Portugal’s location by the Atlantic Ocean. 38°W9°N is a multimedia piece that plays with the reconstruction of that light experience artificially, in the context of lockdown. This new work is a take on placemaking, creating versions of home, lived and experienced. The screenprint has been intentionally made to create a colour pattern that responds to the custom-made light box when illuminated. The result is a shifting, moving image capturing the passing experience of sun-down.
