GMD alumnus, Maria Kyriacou, has recently been promoted to Senior Designer at _Vyde, who work with brands including Nissan, Vodafone, PayPal and VW. So we thought this would be a good time to catch up and find out about her experience of working in industry and finding time for personal projects…
I graduated from GMD in 2021, having taken an additional year to complete my Diploma in Professional Practice. When starting out as a graduate I was working freelance from contacts made during my year break, and outreach through places like LinkedIn. I am now working for an ad-tech start-up as a senior designer.My day to day varies from branding to motion to sometimes adopts and data management. I guess this is a perk of a start-up, you can have a foot in many avenues, without pigeonholing yourself too earlier on. Although I have the luxury of being a specialist whilst dabbling where I choose, the work never seems to not throw hurdles.I constantly find myself saying I’ll find the time, but this really has been a struggle when being creative on a corporate schedule. So, my next personal project will be to host a solo exhibition in the summer of 2024. By setting the personal deadline it gives me something to strive towards, whilst finding the fun in being a creative again.If I had one tip for current GMD students it would be to do the crazy project, take the risk, don’t play it safe and utilise all the workshop spaces more (paying for these spaces hurts when you leave). Even now we still all say if we could go back, ‘I wish I went more crazy, experimental, and tried the weird idea I had’, because you may not get the chance to again”.
